Join me at The Holburne Museum Bath for a practical introduction to the Japanese art of dorodango, a process that transforms clay and soil into highly polished spheres.
This workshop forms part of the Holburne Museum's Up Late programme and is presented in collaboration with Emerge Bath Spa and KIN.
In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to build, refine, and burnish their own dorodango while exploring the properties of clay through touch and making. The session draws on my ongoing research project Earth Notes, which investigates clay, geology, material knowledge, and our relationship with the landscapes around us.
Alongside the making process, I will share examples from my collection of clays gathered from across the UK and discuss how clay can be used as a way of understanding place.
Suitable for beginners and experienced makers alike. No previous experience is required.
All materials provided
Date: Friday 31st July
Time: 5 - 7pm
Age: 14+
Please wear clothes that you don't mind getting a little messy, as we will be working directly with clay throughout the workshop. If you have any local clay or soil samples that you'd like to experiment with, you're very welcome to bring them along, though this is entirely optional and all materials will be provided.
