Earth Carried marks the beginning of my research at the start of my MFA – a foundational body of work developed and exhibited at Bath Spa University. This installation brings together fabric, soil, and process, using site-responsive practices to build a tactile dialogue with landscape and memory.

The fabric works were created by dyeing cloth with residues from the Dorodango-making process – a method of forming polished mud balls traditionally used in Japan. Each piece of fabric was embedded with the soils, pigments, and waters from the places I gathered earth to form the Dorodango spheres. The cloth holds the marks of the making – stained, rubbed, pressed and weathered – becoming a kind of skin or memory of the process.

Mapping memory and place through site-dyed fabric and earth-formed Dorodongo spheres.

Earth Carried

The Dorodango balls, displayed on the floor like scattered geological samples, carry their own sense of place. Each one is made from different soil compositions, left in varying states of polish and texture, revealing the qualities of the land they came from. Together with the textiles, they form a document of labour, care, and slow attention to matter.

This project became the seed of my ongoing inquiry into sustainable, reciprocal relationships with land and material. It reflects the way I began using clay not just as a sculptural medium, but as a collaborator – one that records place and time through touch, weight, and surface. It is a grounding moment, both literally and symbolically, in my continued practice.
