Clay and Cloth is a series of textile works exploring the relationship between land, process, and memory through natural pigment and quilted cloth. These pieces were created using screen print techniques with hand-developed, plant-based binder recipes, carrying the tones and textures of place directly into fabric. The project began as an investigation into how natural materials could be used in printmaking without relying on synthetic or commercial ingredients. Through a process of experimentation and iteration, I developed my own print binders using simple, sustainable ingredients that allowed the colours and consistencies of earth pigments to be preserved and applied effectively to cloth.

The fabrics are layered, stitched, and quilted by hand, combining the precision of screen printing with the softness of textile processes. Each piece is dyed and printed using gathered and foraged pigments—iron oxide, ochres, and clays—mixed into the binder base to retain their raw integrity. The resulting works hold the tactile and visual presence of the landscapes they reference, with the stitching adding texture and rhythm, echoing the slow, meditative nature of their making.
