A COMMON THREAD
A Common Thread brought together work by Central Saint Martins staff, graduates, and students, creating a shared exhibition that explored the relationships between craft, materiality, process, and contemporary art practice. Spanning ceramics, textiles, sculpture, installation, and material-led experimentation, the exhibition highlighted the diverse ways making can operate as a form of research, communication, and connection.
As part of the exhibition, Edie Evans presented Earth Notes, an ongoing body of work exploring clay as both material and archive. Developed through walking, gathering, testing, and site-responsive processes, the work brought together raw earth, clay fragments, pigments, and sculptural forms shaped by direct engagement with landscape and geology. Central to the project is an interest in how materials carry traces of erosion, movement, labour, and memory over time.
Installed within the wider context of A Common Thread, Earth Notes contributed to conversations around embodied making, ecological awareness, and the intersections between fine art and craft practice. The exhibition created space for dialogue between different generations of makers connected to Central Saint Martins, foregrounding shared approaches to material investigation, experimentation, and process-led practice.
